When he completed his service in 1948, he attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. The next year, however, World War II compelled the young actor to join the Royal Navy in service of his country. He eventually made his professional debut at the age of 17, appearing in a production of "Hamlet" with John Gielgud's repertory theater in 1944.
